Frozen Synapse

Frozen Synapse is a simultaneous turn-based strategy game developed and published by Mode 7.

Simultaneous turn-based strategy games have been around for along time. What Frozen Synapse brings to the board is an accessible yet complex strategy game (Very much like the game Conquest).

You command a squad of soldiers in a turn-based arena that pits you against a Human or AI opponent to complete an objective. Objectives range from Hostage rescue to elimination, missions can be played in a light or dark mode the latter being a mode where each player is unable to see their opponents soldiers.

Shotgun!

The controls are simple and very easy to pick up which allows you to pull off complex tactical manoeuvres almost immediately. This game definitely falls into the easy to learn yet hard to master archetype.

The single player modes consist of a 55 mission campaign and randomly generated skirmishes to ensure you don’t get bored. Both modes are a good way to train your skills for the multiplayer aspect of the game.

RPG! The game and weapon.

Multiplayer is where you may spend most of your time as the AI aren’t always up to scratch and can do silly things at times. There are many players online to face off against which is great as you can find people who are near your skill level. Unfortunately, almost all players only want to play one mode, which is Dark Extermination (which is luckily one of the best game modes). This isn’t a big issue but if you want to play another game mode you may have to wait a while before you come across someone who wants to play too.

With a very clean UI and easy controls, Frozen Synapse is one game you don’t want to miss out on. It has polished gameplay and even planned future content (Multiple players FTW).

Pros

5. Kenshi

Said to be an open ended, squad-based strategy RPG. Kenshi looks interesting mainly because of the features it possesses. Characters you meet can be more powerful then your team. Some will be allies others enemies but all with an Intelligent AI that allows you to reason with characters and work together.
